Foot Health Professional Development Path Through SMAE

At the end of 2014 SMAE contacted all of their FHP Members regarding an opportunity to take up further ("Top Up") training that would eventually give them the options to either work in the NHS or eventually become an HCPC registrant or both. Since then they have been moving forward successfully with Queen Margaret University to develop a new Higher Education course titled 'Diploma in Higher Education (Podiatry Assistant)'. Their Validation Event was held onsite with Queen Margaret University on Thursday 10th March 2016 and they are extremely proud to announce that the programme has been approved!

The "Diploma in Higher Education (Podiatry Assistant)" will be studied part time over two years, with the first cohort commencing September 2016. (Please note, this further training is titled "Diploma in Higher Education", which is the Scottish equivalent to a UK Foundation Degree) ). Upon successful completion of the course one may chose to remain in their practice with a wider scope of practice, join the NHS as a Podiatry Assistant or join the QMU BSc Hons (Podiatry) as a 3rd year student.

They are continuing to strive for further training for their FHP Members, and in response to popular request they are therefore aiming to provide a pathway that leads to HCPC registration via a two-step process. In brief, the course will begin in September 2016 and will vary slightly to the current FHP course in the sense that each Module will have a deadline date that must be met. Module assessments vary between Modules and will be in the form of either MCQ's, Short Answer Questions or Essays. Each year of the course will require Students to attend our newly built clinical facilities here in Maidenhead for a 2 week block of clinical training/lectures (for which the dates will be given well in advance).

This course shall initially run one cohort per year and there are limited places available. In order to enrol one must meet all the criteria below:

- You must have successfully completed the Foot Health Professional Course which carries 60 HE Credits (this Diploma in Higher Education follows on from the Credit Rated Foot Health Course)

- You must have a current MEP/First Aid certificate

- You must provide evidence of completing CPD in the current year

- You must agree to a DBS (or agree to an update of a recent DBS)

With regards to the Open Day, we have very limited space available as it has proven extremely popular, however it is being held on Saturday 11th June 2016. This Open Day is open to all FHP's whom have qualified with us on the 60 HE Credit FHP course which began in 2008.
